Outsmart Dumpster Divers

In 2010 NAID contracted an investigation group to conduct an audit of information found in 50 Toronto dumpsters over a span of 2 months.

They found:

  • 14% of the garbage contained confidential information.
  • 75% of the doctor’s offices had personal financial or medical information in their trash.
  • 20% of the healthcare sector – which includes doctor’s offices, hospitals, pharmacies, testing labs and extended care facilities – were found to be discarding personal information in a publicly accessible manner.

All of this could have been prevented if these offices had implemented a Standard Operating Procedure for the safe storage and timely destruction of sensitive records.
